The Process:

Generally, pharmaceutical tablet coatings are constitutive of plasticizer, a sugar or cellulose based binder, film forming agent and colorant, which are supplied in granulated or powder form material. Tablet coating is divided into sugar coating tablets, film coating tablets, enteric coating tablet based on different materials or functions.

It is employed mostly:

1, To mask the color, taste and smell of the drug;

2, To control the release of drug into the body;

3, To improve the appearance of the tablet-make a more elegant product;

4, To protect tablets form moisture, light and air in order to the stability of tablets.

The finished coating is applied to the tablets by spraying in coating pans. There is a key ingredient called Titanium Dioxide, in many tablets. While many other proprietary coatings are designed to be easily dispersed, Titanium Dioxide is hard to be dissolved. So the most important thing to manufacture tablet coating is to dissolve this key ingredient. A typical method of dispersion is as follows. Firstly, charging the water/ solvent into the mixing vessel, with the mixer positioned off center to create a vortex. Secondly, adding the dry ingredients which would be drawn into the vortex. Thirdly, mixing continues until the ingredients are fully dissolved.

 

The Problem:

However, some problems may be caused during this process if you use the traditional mixers and agitator.

1, Easy to form agglomerates and can’t be rapidly broken down by using traditional mixers and agitator;

2, A low particle size is required in order to avoid clogging of the spraying apparatus;

3, Materials can’t be solved at ambient temperatures since some ingredients may be heat sensitive;

4, If the colorant is not properly dispersed, flecks of color can occur in the tablets since a wide range of colors are used in tablet coating;

5, The mixer should be capable of circulating the entire contents of the vessel to ensure uniformity;

6, Mixing equipment should be easily cleaned.

 

The Solutions:

Detailed manufacturing process is as listed. Firstly, The tank is charged with base liquid. Start the Kos high shear emulsifier pump and add coating granules and other ingredients. The strong centrifugal force and shearing force will be generated by the rotation of the stator and rotor of high shear inline pump. If the pump is three-stage one, it rotates very fast. Secondly, the granules are milled in the gap between the stator and the rotor. Other material such as fresh liquid and powdered ingredients would be drawn into the work head. Thirdly, the granules will be dissolved into fine particle size after thousands of circulating shearing and smashing. Finally, the finished product forms.
